We spoke to Sara Weale, Head of Web Design and Development at The National Library of Wales (Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru) in Aberystwyth, to find out how TicketSource's API allowed them to deliver a bilingual event listing page in both English and Welsh.

What events are organised by the National Library?

The National Library is a copyright library, which means we have the right to a copy of every publication printed in Britain and Ireland. We’re not open access, like a public library, and so we organise lots of activities to welcome people into the building. Our events include weekly guided tours, lunchtime lectures, music gigs and art workshops.

Why did you decide to use TicketSource?

By 2016, our existing in-house ticket-selling system was nearing the end of its life. We looked online to see what systems were available, and which ones were used by other institutions and narrowed it down to TicketSource. They proved to be the most helpful and appropriate for what we wanted. The costs are also very reasonable – the National Library is funded by the Welsh Government, and it’s vital we make the best use of public money.

How has TicketSource responded to your needs?

The National Library provides its services in Welsh and English. When we first approached TicketSource, we flagged up our requirement for bespoke bilingual content on our events pages. They recommended we look at using their API integration. Their API allowed us to code our own solution, bringing information in and populating our own website pages in Welsh and English. The API makes the interface better for users as well as reducing work for staff, as they don’t have to input data into a separate system.

What would you say to an event organiser who’s thinking of using TicketSource?

The backend online ticketing system is very intuitive and easy to use, and highly flexible and extensible – it can be used by a local society right up to a national institution. TicketSource is a very good Welsh company and they’re very nice people, very helpful and responsive, so do contact them for a chat!
